What Impact Will the New-Built Metro Bring to the Transportation of Second-Tier Cities? From the Perspective of a Multilayer Complex Network

Abstract Metro is being developed rapidly in second-tier cities. There a need to understand the impact it brings as relates planning and management of whole urban transportation system. In this paper, we applied multilayer complex network theory study problem by contrasting characteristics networks before after metro built. We focused on cities (1) proposed edge functions road subnetwork rail transit with impedance weight; (2) established an interlayer function based transfer behavior couple above subnetworks into weighted network; (3) redefined statistical parameters, such node strength, chessboard coefficient, average least pass cost. At last, Hohhot, China, typical city, was taken case study. Calculations show that new-built city increases convenience reduces travel cost, whereas, vulnerability increases, distribution key nodes reconstructed.
